What is a commissioner for oaths?
A person authorized in Alberta to administer oaths and affirmations and witness signatures on sworn documents, such as affidavits and statutory declarations, for use in Alberta.
Do I need a commissioner or a notary?
If the document will only be used in Alberta, a commissioner for oaths is usually enough. If it is going to another province or country, or you need certified true copies, you need a notary public.
What should I bring?
Valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, the completed document (unsigned), and any exhibits or supporting documents it refers to.
Can I sign before I arrive?
No. Your signature has to be made in front of the commissioner or notary. Leave the document unsigned.
Do you provide legal advice or prepare documents?
No. We commission, notarize and certify documents, but we do not draft their content or advise on legal matters. Please speak with a lawyer for advice.
Can several people be done at one appointment?
Yes. Let us know how many people are signing when you book, and make sure each person brings their own ID.
Have a Document That Needs to Be Sworn?
Call to set up a time. Bring your photo ID and the unsigned document, and we will take care of the oath, signature and stamp.
